The Engineering is Elementary unit is a 4-part classroom unit in late winter/early spring in which the kids learn about problem definition, research, development, testing and tradeoffs, with the primary problem being water filtration. There are set-up lessons that the teachers will do, and then two sessions of experimentation, which require parent volunteers. The EiE Coordinator helps teachers find parent volunteers for the experimentation (but these class sessions don’t require any preparation, and the volunteers are there in a supporting role). A background in engineering is not required for the EiE Coordinator role, but a science/engineering background is certainly a plus.
