The Mathematical Olympiads for Elementary and Middle School (MOEMS) was established in 1979 with the express purpose of teaching strategies for novel problem solving, developing flexible thinking skills, as well as fostering and encouraging mathematical creativity and inventiveness.
In line with this spirit, Hastings is proud to offer 4th and 5th grade students the opportunity to participate in MOEMS during the 2023-2024 school year. Students who register will be organized into one of two 35-person teams. Students on the team will participate in 5 monthly mathematics contests from November through March. Each contest consists of 5 novel questions designed to push and extend mathematical thinking. In addition to the contests, students are expected to attend a weekly practice where they will engage in lessons designed to prepare them for the contests. Topics will include: Divisibility, Number Sets & Number Theory, Fractions, Statistics & Probability, and Geometry. No prior experience with organized math competitions or contests is necessary. Just come with a love for learning, an interest in mathematics, and a willingness to persevere in the face of difficulty!
Both the practices and contests will take place virtually on Sundays from either 9:00-10:00 or 10:00-11:00. Please double check the meeting and contest dates before registering. Registration is limited to a total of 70 students and the cost is $120 (around $9 per class). The cost includes a participation trophy for every student, trophies for the winners and an end of the program party in April 2024.

Please Note: While we intend to sort students based on grade level with 4th grade meeting at 9:00 and 5th grade meeting at 10:00, depending on registration numbers we may have to organize the groupings a different way. This means your child may end up in either the 9:00 or 10:00 class on Sundays. Prior to the start of the practice session on November 19th, you will receive the details for the weekly virtual meeting from the teacher directly.
